If pure price-per-core is the goal, Hetzner is cheaper. If you want the friendliest developer experience, DigitalOcean edges it. Infrastructure marketing is built around excitement — new services, new abstractions, new acronyms. Almost none of that excitement is useful to a team trying to keep a product online.
What actually matters is that the servers come up when you ask for them, the network behaves the way the documentation says it will, the bill is the number you predicted, and the console does not change under you every quarter. Linode is unusually good at all four, and unusually bad at generating headlines about it.
If your project needs a specific exotic managed service, that trade is wrong for you and you should buy elsewhere — we have said so plainly above. But if what you need is somewhere dependable to run software, the absence of drama is not a limitation. It is the product.
